Self Portrait-01.png

My name is Yasi Nik and I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. My family and I moved to the U.S. when I was 16.

Growing up I always had a creative side and knew I wanted to work in a creative industry. With my dad being a civil engineer, I decided to follow his path and go into architecture. After two years of architecture school, I realized it is not my calling like I thought it would be. I was very discouraged and It took me nearly a year to get my lost confidence in my creative side back. I finally decided to give visual communication a chance. At first, I was still figuring out whether or not I belong in the graphic design world and I struggled to find my footing. However, in time I learned this is where my passion lies and started to love this diverse major.

Being from Tehran and moving to Dallas when I was a teenager was a very difficult transition and an even more difficult culture shock. I had to adapt to a whole different lifestyle very quickly. And although in the beginning, the “ first-generation immigrant” label made me feel like I don’t belong, after some time I figured out I can bring in my unique culture and background into my designs and use it to my advantage. I also started looking at Iranian graphic designers’ works and continue to be inspired by them.

It took me a while to get a clear vision of what I want my future to look like. I envision myself going into a branding or packaging design agency, where I continue to design creative solutions for companies seeking design services. I’m motivated to create meaningful designs tailored to each brand’s personality and hopefully be an inspiring designer for other young artists and graphic designers choosing to walk the same path as myself.
